You Need to be Properly Educated Before You Can Maintain a Healthy Fish Tank
Education goes hand in hand with populating a custom fish tank. You cannot just expect to buy a load of new fish and watch them swim happily around all day. You have assumed responsibility for their health and to do your new job properly you need education.
For example did you know that most fish don’t use their nostrils just to breathe like other animals and birds? The primary function is to smell food. When people say to you not to get into the water with an open cut it is because sharks can smell the blood from miles away. When feeding fish in your new aquarium you will notice that some species appear to initially ignore the food. It is only when the water has become tainted with the smell that they realize they are being fed. Some fish have very poor eyesight and in most species the most developed sense is their sense of smell.
If you are interested in breeding the species in your custom fish tank you will need to know if they are egg laying or live bearing. Fish are not great at breeding in captivity and you need to be a very experienced owner before taking on this additional responsibility. Perhaps one reason why there is little breeding is the fact that most fish will go out of their way looking for safe locations for their eggs and in the average aquarium these shelters just do not exist. Another reason is that often people buy two male fish rather than a male and female as it can be difficult to tell them apart. In live bearing fishes, you can usually distinguish the sexes by the shape of their anal fin. Some aquarists will experiment trying to interbreed different species. Their success rate depends on a mixture of the species, their experience and other factors in the custom fish tank.
