Simple fixes for irksome wireless problems
Technology continues to improve and make our lives easier, but with each new advance comes another thing that can go wrong; the better the advance, the trickier the fix.
Some problems occur seemingly out of the blue and are just downright annoying. Having your wireless connection drop out is one of those problems, particularly when it happens just as you were about to send that world changing e-mail or make that last minute auction bid. These problems can sometimes have a simple fix, but others may be too intricate to handle alone.
• The obvious – If you have any sort of computer problem, always restart your machine. Clichéd as it sounds, this can solve an array of technical problems. It may be that your computer and router have stopped speaking to each other and they’re having problems getting back in sync. Resetting your computer means all technological negotiations go back to the start and, hopefully, your wireless comes bounding back into the arms of your machine.
• Someone else’s fault – Check to see everything’s connected and that the internet’s actually made the treacherous journey to your home. Check your modem or router to see which lights are shining – most models have an indicator marked ‘status’ or ‘data’. You want this light to be on. If it’s off or flashing, you have a problem that’s going to involve long and arduous phone calls to your internet provider.
• If it ain’t broke… – One main cause for wireless problems is when someone decides to move the wireless adaptor. It may seem like a small thing to trigger off such annoying problems, but changing its position just slightly can move it from a signal hotspot to a dead zone. Put it back pronto and get back to the good times. Alternatively, if you’ve never had good signal, experiment with positions a little until you get the best results.
Some problems, of course, may need a professional’s eye or, worse still, going back to the Stone Age and using cables to get your internet. While you’re in limbo, you may want to see if it’s worth your while getting a wireless broadband pay as you go package so that you can get connected through the wider wireless network without having to rely on the wires to your home. Or, when your home connection fails, you can also use your mobile phone or tablet 3G broadband to check your local library’s opening times to use their free connections.
