TV Buying Guide: What is an LED TV?

There are various types of TV’s on the market and it may confuse you when you are looking to buy the right monitor for you.

LED TVs are LCD TVs, but these new sets just use LED backlights rather than the fluorescent-type backlight which are used in the majority of LCD TVs. An LED TV is in fact a better quality LCD TV.

How LED Technology Works

There are two ways in which LED backlighting is being used in an LCD flat panel television sets. One way of how LED backlighting is used is called Edge Lighting. In this method, selections of LED backlights are placed along the outside edges of the screen. The light is then distributed across the screen. The good thing about of this is that black levels are not as deep and the edge area of the screen normally tends to be brighter than the centre area of the screen.

By placing the backlighting in this way allows the LED/LCD TV to be designed and built thinner than a normal television. The other way of LED backlighting is known as Full-array or also sometimes referred to as Full LED. These types of monitor have several rows of LEDs which are placed behind the entire surface of the screen.

The sets of this make and specification use a setting called ‘local dimming’. Local dimming allows each LED or a specific group of LEDs to be turned on and off independently within certain areas of the screen, giving the user more control over the display and picture quality.

Unlike the Edge-lit LED TVs, the monitors that use the full-array or full LED backlighting are slightly thicker in and bulkier in design.

If you are considering on purchasing an LED/LCD television, it will be worthwhile doing some research. Are you thinking of buying a smart TV, or one that is more interactive? If so it may be worthwhile considering what makes and models are available with this technology first to narrow down your search.
