What Makes Biscayne Bay Unique?

Biscayne Bay was formed from two different types of limestone. It has two distinct ecosystems, the hard bottom, which comes from the limestone and is a veritable underwater dessert, and the sea grass meadows, which includes patches of Johnson’s sea grass, which is a threatened species.

The bay also includes mangroves trees, trees that have adapted to the salt water, with some species filtering the salt through their leaves and others through their roots to produce forests of strong, healthy trees. Several animals also make the bay home. At different times of year, visitors can see lobsters, pelicans, sea turtles, several species of birds and manatees. Coral also grows in abundance.
