Take joy in the Cobdogla Irrigation/Steam Museum Humphrey Pump and Steam Open Day
South Australia is home not just to diverse cultures but also to one of the world’s most legendary industrial projects of all time. To commemorate the said engineering projects and allow the world to have a glimpse of the past, a historical museum was built originally to celebrate South Australia’s 150th birthday but now it houses the precious projects which have been part of revolutionizing the steaming and irrigation system we are using today.
You will find the Cobdogla Museum at Park Terrace, Cobdogla. If you happen to pass by Sturt Highway, you will see a sign that says Park Terrace.
The famous ‘Big Thumper’ of Australia will be witnessed by many people all over the world, as alive and real as it was before. You can only see this at Cobdogla Irrigation Museum, featuring the world’s one and only working Humphrey Pump which have been taken cared of and meticulously restored. This machinery will be displayed and have some sort of demonstration with a steam locomotive, steam traction engines, oil machineries, tractors, and other engines and machineries that were commonly used during the revolutionary era for all Irrigation Areas. (Take note that the Humphrey Pump is allowed to run only four times on one year.) The legendary Humphrey Pump is said to be a machine with four stroke combustion pump connected to a gigantic water cannon. Every outgoing stroke which is exactly 2 strokes per cycle can pump out around six tones of water into the chamber and deliver an astonishing rate of 1.25 million gallons in one hour. This is why the Humphrey Pump, although utilizes and old technique, can never be disregarded because it is one of the most influential machineries which the modern world owes its irrigation system to.
When you are thinking of having an exciting day with your family, friends, or loved ones, the Cobdogla Museum is one of the best places in the entire South Australia.
