South African Banners and Historic Flags

I am a big fan of the national flag of South Africa. The current design of the flag as hoisted on modern flag poles of different kinds has been in use for some 15 plus years. The previous national banner flew for nearly seventy years before a change was made. The use of historic flags and such, and other means of display, including wall treatments, are ever increasing. Big flags are flown incredibly tall flag poles these days, by countries all over the world.

Those that have traveled to South Africa might have seen wall treatments of all kinds that feature elements found in the design of the national South African flag. The previous national banner was a tricolor type flag and was done away with in ’94.

In the quarters of the shield that was used on this previously used national tricolor, the Cape of Good Hope was symbolized by a woman next to an anchor; Natal by wild animals; the Orange Free State by the orange tree; and the Transvaal by the wagon. The crest is a lion with a bundle of rods, which refers to the country’s motto, which states: “Strength in Unity.” Interestingly, the Dutch a good few centuries ago introduced the general use of colors on the previous tricolor.

The design of the current national flag as used for display of different kinds, including wall treatments, features horizontal stripes in the colors red and blue, each equally sized. These stripes are separated by a central green colored band, which splits into two diagonal arms, of which the ends are connected with the two corners of the South Africa flag on the hoist side of the banner.

Those interested in art might see a need fulfilled in this far distant republic. Interestingly, the oldest art artifacts and such in the world were found in a cave located in South Africa. The art that was discovered is estimated to be some 80000 years old. The art includes the use of snail shells as part of an ancient necklace.

Those that traveled to or watched the world soccer games of ’10 might have seen this national South Africa flag hoisted on flag poles or displayed from other small and tall objects throughout the nation. Today, it is not only flown from poles in South Africa, but also used for purposes of all kinds in terms of display, including wall treatments.
