Is Database Marketing Positive Or Negative?
Ever since the internet arrived, database marketing has encountered an increase in level of popularity. It’s no longer merely a case of purchasing a data source of contact numbers and contacting them in the hopes of making a sale. Now you can collect your database of email addresses and mail this particular list email messages with the idea of making sales or simply generating qualified prospects.
The database marketing industry keeps growing each day. Many people get their in-boxes stuffed on a daily basis with emails marketing items that they might want to buy. The list is actually produced by businesses who carry out surveys and is then sold to other businesses that market yet more companies items.
It’s very easy to get yourself onto a listing. All you have to do is mark the box which allows a company to send you information on other items whenever you sign a contract. The hard part is getting your self removed from this list. The moment it’s been sold, there’s almost nothing you can do about this. All that you can do is request that you be taken off the list every time you’re contacted. Occasionally this works, sometimes it doesn’t.
So far as sales goes, database marketing can work really well. The reason being the listings are generally filled with the details of what products the people on the list have bought and exactly what their own demographics are. This allows the database marketing organization to evaluate who’s a good person to email and who is going to be a total waste of time. Exactly what this does is actually generate a higher percentage of leads for that company’s customers to follow up on.
So database marketing has two sides to it. The company having the marketing done for them and the individuals receiving the mail. The former gets leads which are much more highly qualified than cold calling can create and the latter gets information about items they may be interested in. So far it seems that database marketing is good for everybody.
The problem comes in when it becomes over used. This is whats called spamvertising, or junk e-mail marketing. This is when an individual or group of people is bombarded by email messages concerning products they have absolutely no interest in and have never had any kind of curiosity about. It can even get to the point in which a person gets more spam than actual mail. It can fill a few hours just trying to get rid of all the spam messages before being capable of getting to the ones that matter.
So, database marketing could be both good and bad. It is a great way to increase awareness of your products and also to produce well qualified leads for your sales people, but it must not be abused. It’s not ethical or even cost effective to send out emails to everyone on a very substantial listing filled with a wide variety of interests and demographics. All that can come of this is having your website logged as a spam website and have it de-indexed in the search engines.
