Celebrities adding star power to car design
The power of celebrities is now stretching much further than the red carpet – and this has seen some of the glamorous elite inspiring, and even designing components and extras for some of the top car manufacturers in the world.
So why are our screen idols getting involved in complicated automotive process? Surely there are people more qualified for that sort of thing? Well, sometimes, a celeb doesn’t have to do anything other than look pretty to have an impact.
A few years ago designers at Jaguar modeled a new car on actress Kate Winslet’s curves. She said at the time of release: “Apparently, the man who designed this car decided that I, for whatever reason, was his ideal woman so he, I guess, was inspired by the shape of my body”. Nice work if you can get it.
Jeremy Clarkson and the Top Gear team were once credited with the development of a spoiler component for the new Zonda, after ‘The Stig’ mentioned that road handling would be massively improved – and it was an idea that the Swedish manufacturer was more than happy to run with.
And Victoria Beckham is the latest celeb to get in on the act after she designed some seats for the Range Rover Evoque at the beginning of 2010.
The general consensus was at the time was that a pop singer/dress designer had no place designing upholstery for one of Britain’s top automotive marques, but Mrs Beckham’s sketches went down a storm with the team handling the Range Rover Evoque’s development and went on to be put into production. Who are we to judge?
Fingers crossed Michael Caine gets involved in the next Mini, somehow.
