Protect Your Outdoor Wood Table From Water Damage
You need to protect your outdoor wood table from water damage. You may have bought a table that is already protected. This protective seal will wear off in time and if you do not apply another sealant you risk ruining your outdoor furniture. Rain, snow and ice will cause wood to warp. The continuous cycle of expansion when the wood gets wet and contraction when drying out will cause the wood to crack. You may also find that the piece attracts mold or mildew which is probably not the look you wanted on your garden furniture.
So how can you protect your outdoor wood table? There are various materials you can use. The first choice you have to make is whether you want to use a tinted product or a clear one. The clear version allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. If you have purchased an expensive set of garden furniture such as Teak then you will probably want to use a clear sealant rather than a colored tint.
The second choice you should consider is whether the materials you use are harmful to the environment. Traditional sealants are harmful not only because of the fumes they release but also the problems caused by disposing of unused materials. You can now find non toxic sealants which won’t last as long as the older traditional kind but they are safer to use particularly if you have children.
You can brush the sealant onto the piece or apply using a sprayer. Used properly the sprayer will probably give you a better finish as the application will be more even. If your outdoor wood table is made from hard wood you probably only need one coat but you should check the instructions to be sure. If you need more than one application, let the first one dry thoroughly before you apply the second coat or you will not achieve a polished finish.
