What Exams are Required for MCSE

Preparation for this exam can be covered in three to eight days of classroom training, 18 hours of Microsoft e-Learning or using Microsoft Press books for self-paced learning.
70-291, this core credit exam towards becoming an MCSE covers implementing, managing and maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 network infrastructure. Preparation for this exam can be acquired in two to three days of classroom training, 12 to 30 hours of Microsoft e-Learning or using Microsoft Press books for self-paced learning.
70-293, this core credit exam towards becoming an MCSE covers planning and maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 network infrastructure. Preparation for this exam can be acquired in five days of classroom training or 22 hours of Microsoft e-Learning. There are no Press books available to prepare for this exam.
70-294, this core credit exam towards becoming an MCSE Certifications covers planning, implementing and maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 active directory infrastructure. Preparation for this exam can be acquired in five days of classroom training or 20 hours of Microsoft e-Learning. There are no Press books available to prepare for this exam.
As of 2010, Microsoft offers three exam choices dealing with client operating systems and an MCSE candidate is required to choose one. The exam suggested by Microsoft for MCSE candidates is Exam 70-680, which covers configuring Windows 7. Exam 70-620, which covers configuring Windows Vista client, and Exam 70-270, which covers installing, configuring and administering Windows XP Professional are the two other exam options for client operating systems.

Exam 70-297 covers designing a Windows 2003 active directory and network infrastructure. Exam 70-298 covers designing security for a Windows 2003 network. Exam 70-285 covers designing a Microsoft exchange server 2003 organization.
MCSE licensing requires one elective exam in addition to its core credit mcitp server administrator exams. As of 2010, Microsoft offers 30 active elective exams to choose from. Six of them are scheduled to be retired on October 31, 2010.
