Unique Flags of South America – Suriname
South American flags and flags of Europe are very much interesting, especially the national flag of Suriname as hoisted on residential flag poles throughout the respective territory. Considered and recognized as independent since 1975, Suriname once was ruled by the Dutch, or the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The coat of arms dates to the 17th century and shows the traditional sailing ship symbolic of commerce. Agriculture is represented by the palm tree, mining by the diamond shape in the center of the shield. The so-called Amerindian population of Suriname is reflected in the supporters of the shield. The motto in featured in the Latin language, which means justice, piety and faithfulness.
Officially titled the Republic of Suriname, this country is located in the northern part of South America. Interestingly, Suriname only counts less than half a million inhabitants, of which most of them live in the northern part of the territory. Also located in the north, is the capital city of the country called “Paramaribo.” Suriname enjoys consistent high temperatures all year round.
Like other representing national banners and flags, an earlier version of the current one was attached to commercial and residential flag poles, and other such objects for a good number of decades during the 1900’s. The current use of colors has wonderful representation and meaning. For example, the use of the color green is said to symbolize the many green forest in the territory as well as hope of the people.
The previous national banner was very much different from the current official one today. The design of the previous flag, including its use of colors, was unique to that respective flag really. The design showed 5 colored stars, connected by an ellipse ring. The stars had the colors black, brown, red, white and yellow, on a white background. It was flown from 1959 till 1975, the year of independence.
