Nissan: West Greenwich commuters may soon travel in the brand

Not too many people take a cab from downtown New York City to West Greenwich. Nissan will provide your transportation, however, if you do decide to make the trek sometime starting in 2013. This is thanks to the fact that Nissan has won a ten-year contract with New York City, worth $1 billion dollars, to be the city’s sole manufacturer of taxicabs. Nissan beat our Ford Motor Company and a Turkish automobile manufacturing company called Karsan Otomotiv Sanayii ve Ticaret.

The contest was entitled Taxi of Tomorrow and was one of Mayor Bloomberg’s green initiatives. Additionally, the program was aimed at finding a taxicab fit for carrying New York City into the next decade. New York City began asking the automobile market for proposals in 2009. Nissan was only recently announced as the winner.

Nissan’s winning bid takes the form of the Nissan Quest minivan and the name of Nissan’s commercial vehicle lineup, the Nissan NV. The winning taxicab design, the Nissan NV200, is therefore instantly recognizable as a Nissan. East Providence Nissan Quest drivers will no doubt feel right at home when visiting the big city and using a taxi for transportation. In fact, Nissan designed their taxicab specifically with tourists in mind. Most notably, the NV200 has a panoramic glass roof. This way, passengers can continue to see the sights of the city from the comfort of the Nissan. East Providence tourists will not miss anything on their weekend get away thanks to the new Nissan NV200 taxicabs.

Additionally, Nissan included even more handy features for the tourist. A 12V plug-in can get tourists a quick charge on their cell phone before roaming the city for the day. Or, the two available USB ports can help power up electronics in charge of capturing the big city fun. These features double as handy gadgets for the workingmen and women of New York City also. As soon as the new taxicabs are in place, a trip, say across town or to the airport that is taking longer than usual will not cut into the workday like it currently does. Businessmen and women will simply be able to plug in their laptops and get back to work!

The Nissan NV200 is scheduled to first hit New York City streets in 2013. The contract then puts Nissan in charge of providing replacement vehicles for the fleet as needed over the following ten years. City officials estimate that there are currently around 13,000 New York City taxicabs and that about 2,600 of these are replaced yearly. Nissan plans to make the Nissan NV200 in a Mexico plant.

Mayor Bloomberg seems to be delighted with the city’s choice for the next generation of taxicabs, stating the new taxicabs will be “the safest, most comfortable and most convenient cab the city has ever had.” As for the publics reaction, well we are just going to have to wait and see.
