The cheapest cars available
Currently the cheapest new car a Brit can buy is the electric Renault Twizy with a starting price of £6,690. For that you can drive around the city for 62 miles before having to charge her up again.
But looking further afield what genuine great offers are available around the world if you’re looking to buy a brand new vehicle? The cheapest of them all is a car called Tata Nano which is sold in India for the equivalent of £1,932. It’s a 624cc 56 mpg runabout with a high rounded exterior but very little luggage space as the engine is at the back. A European equivalent will be available soon and cost around £3,677.
The world’s second cheapest car is currently the Chinese Jiangnan Alto which costs £2,323. It’s produced under licence from Suzuki and has a more conventional small car shape. It has a three-cylinder 800cc engine and a manual four-speed gearbox.
Third spot goes to the Chery QQ which is also made by the Chinese. It costs the equivalent of £2,931 and looks like General Motors’ Matiz. It’s a three-cylinder 800cc hatchback.
A more familiar offering is the car which is the 9th least expensive car currently on the world market, the Hyundai i10. It’s Korean but built in India and costs around £5,577 in Asia. The i10 comes in 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2-litre engine options. The car produced for the UK market has a starting price of £8,195.
If you’re looking for a cheap car and you don’t fancy importing it from India, the best thing to do is probably to buy something used. And if you’re looking for used cars, Maidstone in Kent is one town where there is plenty on offer.
