PS3 – Great Right Up Until Something Fails
Since it’s release in late 2006, Sony’s Playstation 3 has been a massive success as a gaming system. Sony has sold millions of systems, and the inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive on the original unit helped establish Blu-Ray as the preferred format for HD home video. The gaming console delivers fast-paced, authentic graphics and a video gaming setting that is truly state-of-the-art. If you own a PS3, you most likely spend a lot of time with it and like it immensely. Sadly, that all changes when something goes wrong.
There are numerous things that can go wrong with a Playstation 3 – hard disk drive difficulties, laser issues in the Blu-Ray drive, and networking problems are not uncommon. The most irritating problem for many consumers is what has been referred to as “Yellow Light of Death” or YLOD, for short. You turn the system on, the green light instantly turns yellow, and absolutely nothing else happens. A comparable problem can occur if the light should turn red. Either way, the unit no longer works.
If your Ps3 is still under warranty, the ideal option would be to return the unit back to Sony. They will repair the problem and return the unit to you. If your unit is no longer covered by the manufacturer warranty, you can still send the system to Sony, but the repair will set you back several hundred dollars. Furthermore, you will be without the use of your Playstation 3 for up to six weeks, your hard drive will likely be wiped out and reformatted, and you’ll receive no guarantee that the difficulty will not occur again. It’s an expensive, time consuming fix without any guarantee.
The good news is, there are other solutions available. It seems that many causes of the yellow light of death may be repaired by the customer. If you do a fast Google search, you will discover numerous sites providing information about how to fix the problem. What many of these sites neglect to tell you, however, is that there are many causes for the YLOD problem and just as many answers. There is no single remedy that will fix all YLOD problems.

If you have a Playstation 3 with some type of problem and it is still under warranty, by all means, send it back to Sony and let them repair it. If your system has run out of warranty, you might want to consider trying to repair it yourself as opposed to sending it back to the factory for a pricey repair that includes no assurances that the problem is not going to happen again.
