Self driving cars are here!
Cars that drive them self were something I always associated with commercial space travel. We have now come to a time where space travel is soon to be available to the masses and self driving cars are nearly almost here!
We know that the 2011 Ford Focus has a very smart self parking feature, which basically enables the car to Parallel Park by its self. Now VW has announced its Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP), which can drive the car with minimal input from the driver.
At the final presentation of the EU research project, HAVEit – Highly Automated Vehicles for Intelligent Transport the VW Executive Director presented TAP. With driver monitoring, the car can semi-automatically drive, at speeds up to 130 kilometres per hour on motorways.
Dr Jurgen Leahold the Executive Director said at the presentation, “Above all, what we have achieved today is an important milestone on the path towards accident-free car driving. The Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP) bundles semi-automatic functions – functions monitored by the driver – with other driver assistance systems, such as ACC adaptive cruise control and the Lane Assist lane-keeping system into one comprehensive function. “Nonetheless, the driver always retains driving responsibility and is always in control,” he continues. “The driver can override or deactivate the system at any time and must continually monitor it.”
The TAP system offers the perfect balance between automation and driver intervention. The system takes into consideration the driver and the surroundings. TAP will maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, will drive at a driver-specified speed, reducing it as required for bends and will keep the vehicle centred to lanes by using lane markers.
The Temporary Auto Pilot system will be available very soon from a new Volkswagen Scotland dealer as well as dealers throughout the UK and the World.
