The Naini Lake-soul of Uttaranchal
Naini Lake is one of the natural freshwater lakes situated in the Nainital City. The lake is of lunar shape and has the outlet towards the southeastern end. The Naini Lake is quite popular in the hills of Kumaon. The Naini Lake is referred as nucleus of the Nainital’s exquisite and delightful beauty.
This lake provides ample opportunities to the visitors in the context of yachting and boating. The northern end of Naini Lake is popularly known as the Mallital and the southern end is known as the Tallital. The south end has a bridge named as Danth, having the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on one side and a post office on the other. This post office is the only one which is situated near the bank of a lake. No other post office all over the world is located at such a place.
The Naini Lake is surrounded by a bus stand, beautiful stores and railway reservation counter. It is believed that this lake was founded in the year 1839. The lake is the top most priority of many visitors for the recreational activities and the luxurious hotels and resorts located in the nearby areas of the lake justify their choice. The Naini Lake is the heart and soul of Uttaranchal. The beauty of this lake increases manifolds during the night when numerous lights sprinkle towards the edge and leave a breathtaking impression on the visitors.
The depth of this popular lake varies from 6 m to approximately 28m. Seven hills surround the Naini Lake. They are Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi Bandi, Alma, Laria Kanta, Sher- Ka- Danda and Cheena. There are several mythological stories associated with the origin of Naini Lake. The Naini Lake was earlier known as the “Tri- Rishi- Sarovar” which states that it is the lake of three stages i.e. Atri, Pulaha and Pulastya. It is also believed that the dug hole of this lake was filled after worshipping these three stages and the water for this lake arise form the Mansarovar Lake. Hence most of the people residing in Nainital consider that the dip in this sacred lake brings good luck to them.
The Naini Lake is the backbone of Nainital and it is the most prominent among all the other lakes that arise in the Nainital. The Naini Lake along with the nearby temples makes a perfect blend of worship. The name of this lake is derived from the fact that one of the eyes of Sati fell at Nainital resulting in the Naini Lake.
But unfortunately, the results of a survey conducted by Mr. D.K. Pandey (Dehradun Forest Research Institute) shows that the quality level of water in the Naini Lake is deteriorating gradually. The level of pollution has also increased significantly due to an incredible increase in the quantity of waste products from the nearby industries. Hence, several provisions should be made by both the Governmental and Non Governmental organizations for the welfare of this Lake and hopefully we will have the desired effects.
