Lace wigs have several advantages over other hair piece units. Many buyers of lace fronts appreciate the natural looking design and the ability to have long beautiful tresses in just an instant. length is only one of many reasons to wear a lace unit. Trying a short style without having to chop off actually hair is another common reason. Those who usually opt for non lace type wigs can testify to the difficulty involved in finding a wig that is natural looking to the point to being mistaken as “real” hair. The carefully crafted edge of a lace wig mimics an actual hairline. The styling options are extensive. Sweeping the hair into a bang, going without bangs or even the ability to sport a high ponytail without the obvious “wiggy” look is possible with a high quality lace front unit.

Lace front hairpieces fall into two categories: frontal lace or full lace. A wig with frontal lace will have a stretch of the lace base that will act as the “scalp” or “base” of the wig. In a frontal lace wig the material will span from ear to ear. The rest of the wig will be constructed of the same weft design common in more traditionalfront lace wigs. Bonding material may be applied if desired but another popular option for securing the front part of lace fronts is the comb or clip method, where combs or clips attach to the wig cap underneath the unit. Straps or elastic will secure the back edge of frontal lace wigs.

Full lace wigs are often more costly than front lace due to the higher percentage of lace used. A partial or frontal lace unit will contain about 25% or less lace, while a full lace’s base is 100% lace. This allows for natural looking parting anywhere the wearer desires, without any compromise to the “real” look of the piece. With full lace wigs it is necessary to add bonding to the entire perimeter of the wig. The full perimeter bonding allow for more security than other forms of attachment. A full lace unit can be worn on a temporary basis that may be as short as a day or even for extended periods lasting up to weeks before removal is necessary. An added bonus of full lace is the more customized fit available due the snug fit of the base.

Lace wigs can be purchased “precut” or “uncut”. A precut wig has already been trimmed and shaped around the hairline before being purchased. An uncut wig has a long piece of lace at the edge that must be cut to just past the wearer’s hairline before it can be worn. The margin for error in shaping is less than 1/4 of an inch so it is recommended that the services of someone skilled in lace front installation be used to avoid damage to the hair piece. Once installed the lace front may be treated just as one treat a headful of natural hair.
