How RTOs Can Become AVETMISS Compliant
AVETMISS for Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard is a national data standard for VET providers. When registered training organisations (RTOs) use this standard, it becomes possible to export data that contains information about students, the course they study, and the qualifications that they have completed.
Since early 2010, the Australian Quality Training Framework has made it a mandatory requirement that RTOs have an AVETMISS compliant student record management system. AVETMISS covers students and their enrolments. The data collection will include some of the students’ pertinent personal information, where they study, and what they study. All of this information is determined at the time of the student’s enrolment and stored in the student management system.
What should RTOs do to become AVETMISS compliant? Here are some steps to consider and follow:
- To be AVETMISS compliant, RTOs must have a student records management system. By using the standard, data can be stored and exported.
- RTOs have to test the AVETMISS compliance by exporting the data files from their student record management system and validate them. If data will pass the validation process without errors, then the student record management system is deemed AVETMISS compliant.
- Small RTOs which cannot afford to introduce a student management system can be provided with data entry tools to assist them in becoming AVETMISS compliant.
- RTOs are encouraged to submit data to the National VET Data Collection. When a confirmation arrives that the data has been successfully submitted, it is deemed to be compliant. This process will eventually lead to more informed decision making processes for the VET sector as a whole.
- RTOs must submit data according to current arrangements within each relevant state or territory. However, there are some cut-off dates that should be checked and followed.
