Cyber-attack Group to Launch Social Networking Site
Self-proclaimed Internet Vigilante Group Anonymous has reportedly announced plans to launch a social networking site AnonPlus. Earlier in the month, some of the members announced plans to launch a political party in United States (U.S). The move follows recent suspension of Google+ accounts related to the Anonymous group for violation of Google’s terms and conditions. Other sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have also reportedly suspended several accounts associated with the cyber-attack group. The group claims that the new social networking site will be free from censorship and blackout and is open to all. At the same time, counter crime agencies in United States (U.S), United Kingdom (U.K) and Netherlands arrested several individuals for their role in cyber-attacks on major companies. Cyber-attack groups are using microblogging sites to announce or provide information regarding the attacks.
The attack group has claimed responsibility for many cyber-attacks in the recent past including compromise of around 90,000 e-mail addresses and passwords associated with military personnel by intruding into the servers of Anonymous. The infamous group made headlines last year for striking down websites of PayPal, MasterCard, PostFinance and Visa for their non-cooperation to WikiLeaks. The group also launched attacks on the Egyptian, Tunisian and Zimbabwean government websites. The group has been targeting government and defense related websites under the ‘Anti-Sec’ campaign. Anonymous is a loosely knitted group that has continued attacks even after several arrests by counter crime agencies.
The recent attacks have again exposed the security lapses in the IT infrastructure. Organizations need to implement new security mechanisms to secure the IT infrastructure. IT security professionals may keep pace with the changes in technology by updating their skills through online IT degree programs. Organizations face challenges in the form ever-changing threat profile and sophisticated strategies of the cyber-attackers. Regular scrutiny of the IT infrastructure through vulnerability scanning and penetration testing are crucial to detect and remediate weaknesses. Professionals qualified in IT degree programs may facilitate creation of security conscious culture in organizations.
Law enforcement agencies must increase vigilance over the cyber space to counter illegal activities and bring perpetrators of crime to justice. Enhanced cooperation and coordination between Internet security firms, government agencies, corporate bodies and law enforcement may help in curbing malicious activities in the cyber space. Computer forensics training programs and online IT courses may help counter crime professionals to improve their capabilities in tackling cybercrime.
