A brief history of the people carrier

There comes a time in life where you have to bow to the inevitable – that sleek, two-seater number that you’ve loved for the past three years just isn’t going to cut it anymore.

The family is expanding, your first-born is begging you for a dog and you’ve just started a hobby that will take over the rest of your life – golf. Through the years these types of life changes have provided many a dilemma for the motoring enthusiast trying to cling on to their beloved coupes (and youth) because non-clunky alternatives were unavailable.

Fortunately, in this day and age, one doesn’t have to turn to the Toyota Spacecruiser in order to fit family, pets and sporting apparatus on journeys away. Over the last ten years or so people carriers have really come into their own; offering high levels of comfort, capacity, performance and, dare we even say it, style.

There’s quite a few good people carriers on the market at the moment that offer a combination of these all-important elements, but one that’s doing it better than most at present us the imposing and stylish Mazda5.

It’s a handsome beast with great storage and some neat features, including pop-up seats in the back for when the kids have their mates round and you offer the customary lift home.

In fact it has greater levels of practicality, safety technology and that added zest of zoom-zoom in its driving dynamics.

Fingers crossed this short guide has given you a bit of help deciding on the right people carrier – sorry we can’t do anything about the golf.
