Roadsters: The ultimate drive?

Roadsters have long been the thing of automotive legend thanks to gorgeous good looks, spell binding speed, and the fact that a lot of really cool people drive them (normally).

From the iconic Ferrari 375 Indy front-engined roadster that raced in the 1952 Indianapolis 500 to affordable, modern Sunday drive treats that are available today, roadsters have long been first on top of the list for any motoring enthusiast looking for the ultimate tarmac-based thrill.

Luckily, these days, the selection of top quality roadster vehicles available is pretty good, so take time to take a look, see how much power, refinement and style you want (lots of all is usually the way to go) and do your home work.

After you’ve done your research, you may well come up with the conclusion that a new Mazda MX-5 is the way to go. The Japanese pocket rocket has been hailed as a design classic for many years, having taken its influences from classic British roadsters of the past such as the MG Midget, Triumph Spitfire, Austin-Healey Sprite and Lotus Elan.

With the latest version, not only do you get the same brilliant driving experience you get from the classic soft top, you get it for just an extra 37kg of weight, meaning performance, and your hair, will be unaffected. Don’t worry though, should you be unconcerned about the state of your barnet, the hard, retractable roof comes down in a world-best 12 seconds.

Performance wise, the MX-5 Roadster achieves 60mph from standstill in around 7.9 seconds thanks to a punchy 158bhp 2.0-litre petrol power unit.

Not bad for a brilliant looking roadster starting at just £14,415. Hair gel not included.
