How to reduce ‘Bounce Rate’?

Bounce rate can be defined as the percentage of visitors who enter the site but leave the site or “bounce” back rather than continue viewing other pages within the same site. Therefore, an entry page with a low bounce rate shows that the page effectively causes visitors to view more pages and continue on deeper into the web site.

Bounce rate is being used by Google in deciding the position of a web page in its index, when combined with other factors such as site speed, duplicate content etc., it also have an effect on the ranking of your web page. A rising bounce rate is a sure sign that the website’s homepage is boring or off-putting. The other reason for the bounce rate could be session timeout of the website. If the visitor doesn’t interact with the site then a session timeout can cause also cause a “bounce“. Ideally (but can vary) each user session lasts for 30 minutes. If the user is inactive for 30 minutes then the current browser session will end.

In general, every company whether an Outsourced product development company or any other company which is involved in marketing of its brand, come across this issue of bounce rate. Normally, a bounce occurs when a web site visitor only views a single page on a website. The bounce can happen because of many reasons like the one listed below:

1. Visitor navigates away from your page because of irrelevant content.

2. Session timeout occurs (as described above).

3. Visitor closes the browser window.

Google Analytics used by many  custom software development companies is the best tool to analyze the Bounce Rate. A bounce rate of less than 30% is considered as normal, but if it is more than 50% then one should re-check the contents and other necessary factors such as page layout, design etc. of the website. A bounce rate is normally calculated as the Total Number of Visits Viewing Only One Page / Total Number of Visits.

If in case, the bounce rate is high then the webmaster should pay more attention towards page layout and the information rich article.

Every site has four sources of visitors that make up the bounce rate:

1. Low-value referrers. These visitors come from social news sites.

2. Direct links. Scoring direct links from other sites as a recommendation are pretty good at visiting multiple pages on your site.

3. Search Engines. Visitors are directed to the websites while searching from the search

Engines such as “’Google” or “Bing”.

4. Loyal users. Visitors regularly visit the site, and their bounce rate will vary. They may engage themselves in some work like commenting etc., at the same time, they might also only have one or two page views before leaving. This could be because they’re sharing the page, or they’ve already read your recent stuff.

In order to reduce the bounce rate, the most important factor is choosing the most relevant keywords, giving your visitors exactly what they are searching for so that they are far more likely to stay & read what you have to say.
