What is an IP Camera?
If you have been looking into security for your home or office then you will have come across various different types of CCTV. You may well have heard a lot of jargon and technical talk and this will have included phrases such as ‘IP CCTV’. But what does it all mean?
Well essentially IP CCTV stands for ‘Internet Protocol Closed Circuit Television’. Most of us know about the closed circuit television part – it means that you are recording for your eyes only – getting footage of your workplace or storage and recording this internally rather than broadcasting it as with a regular television. This is a big part of security for most properties and means that you can avoid trespassers and catch those that do get in.
So what does the ‘Internet Protocol’ mean? Well essentially this means that the camera is wireless and that it transmits its data using a wireless internet connection. IP CCTV is currently the best form of CCTV and its wireless nature gives it many advantages over other kinds of security cameras.
The first benefit is of course practical – if you have no wires then this means that you don’t need to worry about rigging them up or about choosing locations for your cameras where the wires will reach. It also means that you can decide to move your IP CCTV easily without worrying about drilling holes in the wall. Normally to run the wires discretely from your cameras to your central unit you would have to go into the wall cavities and this would require a lot of work. This would then mean you couldn’t move your cameras – even if you rearranged the premises and the current positions no longer took in everything on display. With wireless IP CCTV however it’s as easy as picking it up and moving it. You can reach it anywhere and there will never be wires to get severed or tripped over.
The internet based method also has more benefits. It means for instance that you can transmit the data and stream it live. This means then that you can view the footage from a remote location as long as it has internet access. Therefore if your alarm sounds on your premises then you can simply log in and view the footage from the cameras and then know if you need to head down there or not. As it’s possible to use motion sensor alarms that work alongside IP CCTV this then means that you can stream the footage only when motion is detected. In some cases you will even be able to control the camera and turn it left and right to take in a view of the whole room.
Finally in some cases you also get ‘VoIP CCTV’ this stands for ‘Voice Internet Protocol’ which means that it can communicate sound too – and both ways. If you see a trespasser then – ring up your CCTV and ask them what business they have on your premises!
