Google’s Two-Step Authentication Process Now Available in 40 Languages

Google has extended the two-step verification process, launched earlier this year to over 150 countries. The service is now available in 40 different languages. The two-step verification process assumes significance in the context of series of data breach incidents affecting millions of people worldwide. Increasing online communities and simultaneous increase in threats have made security of data and identity more important than ever before.

In case of the two-step verification process, after entering the login credentials, the site directs users to another page, which seeks verification code to complete the authentication process. Users either receive the one-time verification code through a call from the company or Short Message Service (SMS) on their mobile number. Users of Android, Blackberry and iPhone devices have the option to generate code through a mobile application. For initiating the two-step verification process, users are required to go to the Account Settings page and register their contact number, provide a backup phone number and create backup codes for use in the case of loss of the primary phone.

The two-step verification is particularly significant in context of Google as all online accounts such as blogger, e-mail and AdWords among others are tied to a single account. Unauthorized access to one of the accounts may easily allow attackers to gain access to other accounts. As such, Internet users must benefit from the security measure and safeguard their online accounts and prevent illegal access to sensitive personal information. Internet users must be cautious while revealing e-mail addresses on different online sites as they may be target of spam and promotional e-mails. It is better to create a separate e-mail account for online subscriptions. E-learning and online degree programs may help Internet users in updating their cyber security awareness.

Many banks across the world have started using the two-factor authentication process to confirm online payments. However, the two-step verification process is not devoid of risks. Over the last one year, mobile devices have been the target of Zeus in the Mobile, ZiTmo and Mitmo Trojan. The malware is capable of intercepting the Short Message Service (SMS) messages and allows attackers to misuse the one-time authentication received from a banks and other online sites. Professionals qualified in masters of security science may help organizations in assessing threats and evolving new security mechanisms.

Malware writers constantly develop new variants and use different techniques to install malware in computers. IT professionals must enhance their skills and know-how through online university degree programs.
