The Southwestern Company was established by Reverend J. R. Graves in 1855 at Nashville, Tennessee of the U.S. Although it was a publishing house at the beginning, yet it incorporated direct selling within its agenda since 1868. The purpose of the company was to help financially deprived students in continuing with their studies. The company started to train students for door to door selling of their products. Even after around 140 years, the company still continues with its summer internship programs. The only difference is that it is more organized in its form now. Approximately 3000 students from more than 30 countries participate in the program each summer.
The Southwestern Company manufactures several educational products like hand books, reference books, software, CD ROM DVDs and others. Students of internship programs can purchase these products at low rates, and then they can sell these products at retail rates after getting training on direct selling. In the training session, expert mentors train students how to sell from door to door. But the real learning session starts when students start selling books and educational products door to door. Every successful can help students to earn large commissions, but more than that, it boosts their moral and makes the best fit for the life ahead. They can gain character strengths and qualities like perseverance, will power, determination, leadership ability, analytical skills and many others. Potential students can join one of the associate business wings of the company, or they can become independent business partners with the Southwestern Company as well.
