Advice On How To Paint a Room

First off, remove any wall art and move furniture away from the wall. Place a tarp on the ground and use painter’s tape to fasten it down. Then, unscrew any electrical outlets or switch plates and tape over those as well.
With a pole sander fitted with 120-grit sandpaper, sand the walls. Work top down, and don’t sand too hard. You should be able to feel the effect you’re having on the wall, but make sure you aren’t overzealous with your sanding. Also, wear a dust mask, those particles can be terrible in your throat. Use a scraper to remove bumps or drips on a painted molding, then use a wet/dry vacuum to clear the dust.
Caulk any gaps where the molding meets the wall and use a putty knife to fill in any holes in the wall. Then, sand again (you know the drill).
To give the roller some space to work, load the bottom third of a brush with paint and apply said paint in two or three inch bands in the corners, where the wall meets the ceiling, and where the wall meets the molding.
Cut paint in around an entire perimeter of wall with a brush, and use a roller to fill in the middle. Make sure there is just enough paint on the roller for steady application.
To use most of the paint, draw a W or M with the roller. Then, paint in overlapping lines to fill everything in and to blend the paint around the perimeter. Continued until everything is covered.
With an appropriately sized (obviously) paint brush, paint the trim.
