7 Tips on How to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets

Precision Painting Plus sets itself apart among Greenvale painters. In addition to their highly-trained, specialized home improvement backgrounds, no other Deer Park painters are as up-to-date on the latest trends, colors, and painting techniques. They were kind enough to share their views on successfully painting your kitchen cabinets. Enjoy

Remove the cabinet doors. Take any screws or hardware out and put them in a safe (er, readily findable) place. Then, sand off rough areas on the doors and the cabinet. Then, because you want a clean workspace, clear away all the sawdust.

Clean the cabinets. With a sponge and denatured alcohol, remove all of the dirt and grease. Make sure the area is well ventilated, because of the alcohol’s fume, and let the cabinet air dry.

<Primer-sealer. With a disposable foam brush, apply an even (that should be a given) coat of primer-sealer to the doors. Begin in the center and follow the grain of the wood. It will need about an hour to dry.

Paint. With a non-disposable (ooh, we’re getting serious!) brush, apply the paint. Better brushes yield better finishes, and you want as smooth a finish as possible. Follow the same path as you did for the primer-sealer, but take your time. Thin coats create fewer brushstroke and have better drying time and adhesion. A fine finish will need two or three thin coats, The paint should be given four hours to dry between coats.

The cabinet base. After the doors are painted, do the same with the bases. The entire process (sand, clean, seal, paint) is the same. The inside of the cabinets won’t need any attention, so tape the edges for a clean finish.

Color-glazing. This is an optional step which can add some color and emphasize the wood grain. To make the glaze, combine equal parts paint and glaze. Tape off any areas that you want to be glaze-less, and then use a disposable bristle brush to apply the glaze. Unless you want bristles permanently affixed to the cabinet, remove loose bristles form the brush before you start.

Remove excess pigment. With a clean brush, remove any excess pigment. As you do this, wipe the brush off with paper towels.
