Google Launches a Music Blog: Magnifier Offering Free Songs For Beta User
Google Launches a Music Blog: Magnifier Offering Free Songs For Beta User For those who haven’t come along the magnifier I bet Tim Quirk, Google’s Head of Music Programming has a better definition “Magnifier is basically Music Beta’s cousin”. Each day there will be a “Song of the Day” available for free. Today’s featured artist is a personal favorite of mine, My Morning Jacket. Head on over and grab two free songs. One of the biggest criticisms of Music Beta prior to yesterday was that there was no way to discover new music (unlike Amazon’s Cloud Player and Apple’s iCloud service, both of which have accompanying music stores).

The move makes sense on at least two levels. Magnifier also plays nicely with another new Google product, the Google+ social network. Readers won’t notice any of the usual Twitter and Facebook sharing buttons. People looking for great free music handpicked by Quirk — who really is an expert, having programmed music for Rhapsody back when it was still called Listen.com —
and his team will find that in order to stream that music, they’ll need to create a Music Beta by Google account. In a sense, this fills in the missing social piece of Music Beta by Google, which the company confirmed last week had no ties “yet” to its social network. This will encourage people to sign up for a free account, which can store up to 20,000 songs.
