GoAir, the affordable airlines, is planning to expand its business.
The era of liberalization, which ushered in by the government of India during the early 90s was an important landmark in the history of civil aviation in the country. The domestic circuit which was dominated by Indian Airlines and Vayudoot was opened up and several new entrants jumped into the field. The field became intensely competitive as the airlines kept on lowering the airfares.
Many low-cost airlines came into existence for taking a share in the expanding market of , cheap flights in the domestic segment. GoAir too joined the group of low-cost airlines in India in 2005. The airline is owned by Jehangir Wadia, the great grandson of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Wadia Group is one of the leading business families in India.
Jehangir Wadia conceived of establishing an airline with the objective of “making domestic air travels in India an affordable commodity”. The airline started operating in the November of 2005 and has its headquarters in Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai.
The airline which started initially with one Airbus A-320 operating six flights a day, presently has 10 Airbus A320-200 aircrafts in its fleet. It has placed orders for another 72 Airbus A320 neo aircrafts, which will be delivered to it starting 2015.
The airline company operates 61 daily flights to 13 Indian cities including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Mumbai, Pune and Srinagar. It has entered into an agreement with Radixx International, a leading technology provider in the field of automated aviation and travel related software solutions.
In order to provide cheap flights to its clients, GoAir tickets have been aggressively priced, making them one of the most affordable. GoAir tickets are available online as well as at the kiosks operated by the company.
The airline has planned its strategy keeping in mind the railway passengers who travel in the first, second and third AC coaches of trains. The airfares of the airline have been intentionally kept at least 40% lower than that of other traditional airlines. The strategy seems to have done the trick for the airline, which is experiencing a steep growth in terms of revenue and passenger volume.
