What Happened to Jake Delhomme?
Reason 1
Jake Delhomme has been to a Super Bowl. This type of experience can be invaluable for a young team with a young quarterback. Having taken a team to a Super Bowl generates instant respect. The fact that the Carolina Panthers team that Jake took to the Super Bowl was nothing to write home about makes the accomplishment all the more impressive.
Reason 2
Jake Delhomme can fill two roles. In addition to being a number 3 quarterback, he can be a mentor to a young quarterback. Look how much he helped Colt McCoy of the Cleveland Browns in 2010. Jake drove to the stadium with him, took him under his wing, and acted with class even though he knew that the faster McCoy grew as a quarterback, the less valuable Delhomme would become with the team. Whether or not this mentor role means Jake becomes a particular team’s quarterback coach would depend on the nature of the team.
Reason 3
Did I mention Jake is a class guy? There is nothing like having someone around who has great work habits and a refreshing ethical standard. It really helps keep the attitudinal momentum positive.
Reason 4
Let’s say you have a major fluke happen with your team. Your prime, #1 future Hall of Fame quarterback goes down and you need to bring in your #2, untried rookie. You are trying for a playoff berth and have all the pieces in place. Your untried rookie has a couple of bad outings and bingo, you have a big choice: Do you feed the rookie to the wolves, or do you bring in a veteran who can walk into any situation and do the proverbial “game management” thing. Who better than Jake Delhomme?
Reason 5
Jake Delhomme is not a bad quarterback. No one could succeed in the Brown’s offense in 2010, and he had a bunch of receivers who couldn’t run routes or catch the ball. Plus he got injured. He’s not Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, but he can help someone.
Bottom Line
I can’t find where Jake Delhomme signed with anyone after being released by the Browns on July 29. I’m sure the Browns or someone would pay him $500,000 to do the dual quarterback coach/#3 quarterback job. Maybe the Browns are all waiting to see what kind of deal Jake can get elsewhere, and then they’ll come up to the plate with an offer.
