Three Simple Ideas to Help You Learn Spoken English
Probably some of you decided at some point, to study English either on-line, or to resort to organized English courses. In one way or another, both methods run in a set frame of time, when you will only focus on learning. When you leave this time frame, you will cease to dedicate your time to the English language, at least in the sense of granting your entire attention. There is still something you can do outside of the studying sessions, to help you continue your improvement. Let’s call it a sort of passive training.
The goal is to willingly expose yourself to English audio sources, which you will constantly hear, while doing something else. Whether you find yourself at home or walking on the street, would be ideal to listen something in English.
1. For most of us is almost certainly a bit late, but there is a trick worth mentioning. In children case (starting from three years old and up) it is of a great help, to watch their favorite cartoons in English. Any normal child up to 12 years old, can learn to speak fluently any kind of new language. This is because the mind, mouth muscles and their hearing, allow them to perfectly mimic other languages and sounds. The brain can easily coordinate the nerve signals received from the tong, jaw muscles and from the ears, so the children can accurately reproduce any words or phrases used around them.
2. Speaking of adults, there is something you can do as well. Often times you are at home and you find yourself busy with the usual chores. A great idea is to let the TV on or to open a radio station in English. The best idea would be the English news channels like CNN or BBC. Thus, you see to your things, while somewhere in the background, you will hear the English language. You don’t have to understand everything you hear. This is not the goal here. It is important for your brain to get used hearing phrases and words in English.
3. When walking down the street or simply relaxing on a bench, some of us prefer to listen to some music, using our portable devices and headphones. This is great, especially as it relaxes you. But if you are in full pursuit of English learning adventure, instead of music you could listen some audio English courses or lessons.
Much like in sports, any new activity, any type of performance, requires training. You need to train both your memory (through grammar and vocabulary lessons) and your brain (through constant listening and speaking). As all these will net results in time, it is essential that you use or adapt the learning process, in relation to your day to day routine. Practice your English with every possible occasion.
The idea remains the same: it is important to hear something that helps you get familiar with the new sounds and words. You do not have to absolutely understand everything you hear. Just listen to it.
