Duties of a Rehabilitation Therapist
Due to certain circumstances some time people are subjected to certain condition, getting out of which is really painful. Even after proper medication the person is in the state of mental trauma and needs help.
Here is when a rehabilitation therapist or a rehabilitation counselor comes to help people to get out of their traumatic situation. The therapist may work with a hospital, drug rehab, a law firm. While the basic responsibility of the therapist is same, duties may vary. He/she has to work with an individual assisting the patient to get back to normal life. His work is more than a responsibility, it has a human side. A good therapist must take personnel initiative to work with a patient. Here we focus more on the duties and responsibilities of the rehabilitation therapist.
Role of a Rehabilitation Therapist
Rehabilitation therapist works with a rehabilitation center. He/she adheres to the following duties:
- He must have full information about the medical history of the patient. Not only should he know the current problem but he must also know any past problem of the patient.
- Apart from just knowing the physical problem of the patient, he must also know emotional side of his patient. The reason for this is because a therapist must act like a helper and not like a teacher. Since everyone is not a fast learner, so he must act accordingly to the situation and person.
- He must be effective in diagnosing the disorder that the patient is suffering from. This includes having in-depth knowledge of the patient’s problem and then making a recovery plan accordingly.
- He must know to improve the basic motor functions of a patient and on improving the reasoning capabilities of a person
- He must know to work towards the emotional, mental, physiological and physical abilities of a person
- He must know to train the patient to do the appropriate exercise according to the problem
- He should co-ordinate properly with the doctors, nurses, the drug specialist, etc, to take care of the patient properly.
- He must know to improve the speech and language disorder of the patient
- He must know the usage of cold compress, hot compress, electric stimulation and other such therapies
Eligibility of a rehabilitation therapist
To peruse the career of a rehabilitation therapist or rehabilitation counselor one must do a masters degree in the related subject. One must take science subject in their high school and graduate in the same. A degree of social science is also required. Other than these a government license is a must.
