The Best Kettlebell Training Course

Kettlebell training in Melbourne is in its infancy. Only ten years ago the world started to hear about the ground-breaking course developed by Dragon Door and Pavel Tsatsouline – the Russian Kettlebell Challenge or RKC.

Since then the RKC has gone onto become the gold standard for kettlebell instruction anywhere in the world. With the course lasting a grueling twenty-three hours over three days and students being expected to be able to lift as much as half their bodyweight for extended periods of time the RKC instructors walk the walk.

But what goes into the course to make it so special?

The biggest influence on kettlebell training has been one man – Pavel Tsatsouline. Since he immigrated to the USA he has become a well-known strength and conditioning author and is highly sought after for his knowledge and expertise. When he created the RKC system he devised a way to reverse engineer what the best athletes do and create drills so that the rest of us can learn too. This reverse engineering process now covers many subjects from flexibility to power to martial arts and the military.

The fitness and fat loss industry are renowned for their complete lack of quality control and this is another thing that sets the RKC apart. Because kettlebell training can be dangerous – these are after all cast iron balls being flung around – there is a necessary degree of knowledge needed in their safe use and teaching. Unlike any other local courses in kettlebell training when you attend a Dragon Door event there is a chance you will fail. At different times more than 50% of the attendees at certifications have failed – meaning that the standard attained by those who pass the RKC is very high!

There is now a Dragon Door certification that can match your level of expertise and knowledge.

Hardstyle Kettlebell Certification

The HKC is Dragon Door’s one-day course for those interested in learning the basics of Pavel’s “hardstyle” system. This course covers the three core lifts of Swing, Get Up and Goblet Squat and is an instructor event.

This is quite an important distinction. Most kettlebell courses are really seminar disguised as “instructor certifications”. The key difference is that for an instructor event the student should leave with a solid game plan as to how to teach that skill as well as what corrective drills to use to fix it when their own clients can’t do it. Most kettlebell training courses simply show you a move and then move to the next one.

If we compare it to martial arts styles Dragon Door’s system is about mastery of basics, of solid understanding of key concepts of force production and athletic movement. These are the black belt masters of a style while others may have seen a hundred different lifts, yet have no real depth of understanding of any of them – white belts parading as black belts.

The HKC will begin the student’s journey into true understanding of key concepts necessary for successful personal training with kettlebells.

Russian Kettlebell Certification

The RKC is the most talked about fitness course on the planet. In just ten short years it has gone from an unknown to being right in the eye of the storm of the kettlebell tornado.

With as many as 30% of students failing at the RKC those who pass are amongst the best trainers, physically and technically, anywhere in the world. In fact, RKC trainers prize their status so highly many stop using their university degree letters after their names and just use the RKC letters!

The RKC covers in great depth six key lifts – Swing, Get Up, Clean, Press, Squat and Snatch. For those who are truly interested in mastery of technique to attain the greatest benefits from training – seek out an RKC trainer. While many will tell you that you need to swap training routines often the reality is very different – the better you become at a lift, the greater the skill you have with it – the greater the reward from using that lift. For example, say you can kettlebell swing a 16kg bell for ten reps. Now imagine you can do that with a 32kg bell! Better skill at the lift can bring you twice the results in the same period of time!

And that’s the real strength of the RKC system and kettlebell training. Research shows that as much as 16oo calories per hour can be burned training the RKC way with kettlebells – or nearly double that of running without the impact!

Higher Levels of Training

The RKC and Dragon Door system is much like a university with many higher, specialized levels of learning possible. There are courses about functional movement and correction, martial arts workshops, Indian Club workshops… The list is growing constantly. For those interested in becoming the best personal trainers they can be, and particularly those interested in functional strength and kettlebell training the decision should be clear to follow the RKC path.
