The Reason Why Bill Gates And IBM Was Wrong

Internet and computer processing is growing rapidly. The software and hardware development process will look like nothing at the end of 2099 when we compare the last two centuries.

In 1943 Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM said: “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers”. He was right – somehow – but in 2007 the 1 Billion computers limit was broken. How could Thomas Watson estimate so wrongly? The keyword is innovation. The development is not standing still.

What is innovation about? It is about what is viable in the current market, desirable for the users as well as what the technology can offer. The 3 factors do have to play along if you will be innovative. A train could be an example of innovation. If you are in the front of the train you will get to the goal first but you also have major cost as you have no one to share it with. However, you are the winner. If you get on the train in time you will share your winnings with the other passengers (competitors). If you do not go for the train you will loose everything.

Searching on Google you will find out that “innovation” is one of the top searching words. The reason why is that we are trying getting advantages towards our competitors. Business men today are getting innovation training. Maybe you have to change the organization too. The organization or the business men might be good at product management. However, they might have difficulties by innovation as the discipline of innovation takes some training unless you are a talent.

An Internet talent is Bill Gates. No one is questioning his business results. But in 1981 Bill Gates made a statement which does not cover our need to day. He said: “640K ought to be enough for anybody”. Today even a CD-Rom has 640K.

Other business men have made interesting statements as well. In 1949 popular mechanics did forecast the weight of the computers to be no more than 1.5 tons. A netbook weights about 1 kg and mobile devices even less.

The founder of Digital Equipment Corp. Ken Olson made a statement in 1977. He was sure that no one would want a computer at home. Today we are using our computers at home as well as at work and when we are on the road.

You can say that products do have their time but the ideas are today’s news. The question is regarding the estimates will truth from now on? The use of products can be estimated with almost no errors but it is more difficult to estimate the timing of the products.
