‘Invincible’ Donald fires 64 to lead PGA Championship at Wentworth
Aspiring world number one Luke Donald admitted his sparkling round of 64 on the opening day of the BMW PGA Championship left him feeling “a little bit invincible.”The Englishman can move to the top of the world rankings with victory at Wentworth and carded eight birdies to shoot a seven-under par round that saw him lead Italian teenager Matteo Manassero New Soccer Jerseys by two shots.
Many of the field struggled in wet and blustery conditions, including U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell who shot a four-over round of 75, and current world number one Lee Westwood, who finished on one-over.But Donald showed immaculate control to lead. “That was probably one of the best rounds I’ve ever played to be honest,” he told the European Tour web site.”It was tough conditions out there — the wind was swirling, there was some rain showers, and this isn’t an easy course in the best of conditions.
That was probably one of the best rounds I’ve ever played to be honest”So to pretty much have total control of the golf ball today doesn’t happen very often in golf but that’s how I felt today. I was just seeing the shots and I was able to hit them. So it was very, very satisfactory today — very, very pleasing.”I guess you feel a little bit invincible.
You’re out there and just have a lot of good feelings, that there’s not a lot of negativity that creeps in.Everything is positive around you — you’re seeing the shots well and everything is working.”Eighteen-year-old Manassero carded six birdies and one bogey to leave himself well placed going into the weekend, while Sweden’s Johan Edfors also sits on five-under.Ocsar Floren, also from Sweden, sits on four-under with English duo Ross McGowan and Ian Poulter, Spain’s Jose Manuel Lara and Bradley Dredge, from Wales, on three-under.Europe’s victorious 2010 Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie in a pack of players on two-under.
Manassero said: “It was really good, Iniesta Jersey I played really solid. I hit the ball well, didn’t miss many shots, which I think conditions like this, on this course, it’s key. “It’s tough conditions and the course is firm, but I managed to finally play a good, solid round, and that was the key of five under. Putting is not easy, but if you put the ball in play, you’ve done more than 50 per cent.”Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, from South Africa, finished 15 shots off the lead after an eight-over round of 79.
