A ‘shuttle valve; is a type of control valve used in machinery.
It has several applications:
i. More switch can use on one machine; By using the shuttle valve, one can use more than one switch for operated on a machine for safety. We can place each switch at any place that suitable. This application normally use at heavy industrial.
ii. Winch brake circuit; – The shuttle valve provides brake control in this pneumatics winch application. When the compressor is energized the shuttle valves directs air to open the brake shoes. When the control valve is centred, the brake cylinder is vented through the shuttle valve and the brake shoes allow to close.
iii. Air pilot control; – It can converting from air to oil permits locking of the cylinder. Shifting the 4-way to either extreme position applies air pilot through the shuttle valve to hold the 2 air-operated valves open and apply oil under air pressure to the corresponding side of the cylinder. Positioning manual valve to neutral exhausts pilot pressure closing the 2-way valves and trapping oil non both sides of the cylinder to lock in it position.
iv. Standby and emergency system; – Compressor system requiring standby or purge gases capability are pressure controlled by the shuttle valve. This would be for instrumentation, pressure cable, or any system requiring continuous pneumatics input. If the compressor fails, the standby tank, (regulated to slightly under compressor supply), will shift the shuttle valve and take over the function. When the compressor pressure is re-established, the shuttle valve shift back and seals off the standby system until needed again.
