Lorry driver training day reveals every-day driving challenges
A charity lorry driver training day has revealed to the public the main challenges drivers face and the extra training they require to help meet those challenges, reports leading provider of HGV training HGV Express (http://www.hgvexpress.co.uk/).
The annual PDA Training Day organised by the charity Professional Drivers Association was held in Guyhirn, Cambridgeshire on Saturday 30th July. The lorry driver training day is designed to introduce the public to the skills needed to drive heavy goods vehicles and the hazards drivers face. A dummy in a high visibility jacket was used in front, behind and around a heavy goods vehicle to illustrate the many blind spots on the average sized lorry. Car drivers were asked to guess how far a lorry was from them when looking in a rear view mirror, and each time underestimated the distance, indicating why it is claimed (perhaps unfairly) that trucks ‘tailgate’ cars.
The training day continued with the members of the public being able to receive one-on-one truck driver training from an experienced truck driver, practising manoeuvring around a yard. The most popular request was to be shown how to reverse an articulated lorry: no mean feat to the uninitiated, but a breeze for those properly trained. The day concluded with a demonstration of roping and sheeting, something which is vital for drivers of freight carrying vehicles to ensure the safety of other drivers on the road. The Professional Drivers Association is a charity run entirely by volunteers. The members of the charity are mainly full-time lorry drivers who benefit from a hub of information and knowledge and a network of industry peers.
This lorry driver training day rightly stresses the importance of adequate truck driver training, both the mandatory HGV courses at the outset of a truck driver’s career and ongoing refresher training. HGV Express is one of the UK’s leading truck driver training schools, setting people on their way to a lucrative, solid and rewarding career. Find out more at http://www.hgvexpress.co.uk/.
