Common Golf Cart Battery Failures
As you know, all electric vehicles, including electric golf carts, are completely powered by electrical energy that are stored in the batteries. First, if you find a set of golf cart batteries are out of shape, you need to measure its voltage. If the voltage is normal, we can exclude the short-circuit problem. Due to overcharging, it cause thermal runaway and then batteries are out of shape. You should check the parameters of chargers. If the voltage is higher (than 44.7V) with no overcharging protection or its current is lower (than 0.3A), you must replace a charger with correspond parameter to charge these batteries.
Secondly, if there are just one or two cells out of shape, it might be for different voltage or sulfation. The different voltage might cause it short circuit or self discharge etc. If the battery generates sulfation, the internal resistance will increase to make it out of shape. And the incorrect connection between charger and battery is also one reason. You should check the discharge capacity and self discharge specification of normal batteries. If there is no problem with these batteries, it means they are all right.
How to check and troubleshoot the “backward” battery
First of all, charge it and discharge it with 5A. During discharge, continually measure the battery voltage, and pick up the “backward” batteries whose discharge capacity is insufficient. Then add 1.040 dilute sulphuric acid to just see the electrolyte. Go on charging for 12-15 hours. Please note that its temperature doesn’t exceed 50℃ during charging. When it is the end to charge, stay it for 0.5 – 4 hours, and then discharge it with 5A. During discharge, measure the each cell voltage. If the time of discharge or each cell voltage does not meet the demand or have more difference from normal batteries, you should repeat the above charging operation till it meets the demand.
