One day trip to Yercaud
Yercaud, a picturesque hill station is located in Tamil Nadu near the town of Salem, at an altitude of 1,500 meters. This town derives its name from Yeri for ‘lake ‘in Tamil and Kadu for ‘forest’ combining to form Yercaud.
The Servarayan temple is the highest point in the hill area called the Shevaroy hills situated at a height of 5326 feet. This hill contains several species of plants and wild life that includes bisons, deers, rabbits, snakes and a variety of birds. It has an Orchidarium run by the Botanical Survey of India .It is also known for its coffee and orange plantations. The nearest rail station is Salem Junction (35 km).
The Yercaud Lake surrounded by gardens and trees is a major tourist attraction. The garden surrounding the lake looks its best in May when the Summer Festival is organized. The telescope mounted at the Lady’s Seat offers a breath-taking view of the winding ghat roads and the town of Salem.
Grange, the castle like building which served as a summer retreat of the British, still retains its imperial majesty. Pagoda point, another tourist attraction, provides a panoramic view of the town of Salem lying way down which when viewed in the night gives an impression of a carpet of glittering diamonds. Bear’s cave a natural habitat of bears is situated near the Norton Bungalow on the way to Servarayan Temple.
Anna Park, a lovely garden located near the Yercaud Lake, the Lake Park, the Gandhi Park and the Children’s Park provides ample opportunities for recreation to children and adults alike.
Other places of interest in Yercaud, includes the Green house with its impressive collection of Ornamental Plants, Orchard cum Nursery of Rose Plants, Silk Farm, Arthur Seat, Horticulture Research Station and the Cauvery Peak.
