Functions of Uninterruptible Power Supplies
Power supplies for a computer are used to convert regular current into low Direct Current Voltage for the computer. They are the biggest reason behind wastage of power.
When the load is higher by connecting a lot of hardware to the system it causes voltage drop at the output and hence results in lesser efficiency. When this is the case the computer system fails to perform up to the mark. It not just creates waste heat but along with it creates an overhead of more powered cooling system. Because of the combined effect of heat and necessity of fan, noise level increases and overall productivity comes down. Heat is very undesirable for any electronic component as this can bring about chemical changes and the process of failure starts. Wild fluctuations in the power might cause hardware damage. This calls for the usage of UPS or surge protectors in order to protect the computer. Power supplies are meant to deliver at least 80 % of efficiency. It is important to invest wisely on an SMPS. Having a reliable power supply is a necessity. Cheap SMPS are meant to come bundled with trouble for your computer system.
Most common problems faced by computers due to the inefficiency or breakdown of SMPS are:
Computer failing to start, freezing, random rebooting and at the worse cases some hardware failure or in other extreme cases complete system blow up.
Power supply problems can be grouped into following types. Low output power, no power or high output voltage, power blinks or interruptions, power supply cut off once system is switched on or after being on for some time.
Things to look after when the SMPS dies out-
When there is no power to the Computer-
Replace the wall outlet with some other device. If the device is not receiving the power check the cable from wall outlet to the Computer using a multi-meter while making sure of having a good ground for the lead of multi- meter. If there is power next step would be to open the cabinet and check if power is present from SMPS to motherboard.
When system randomly reboots without prior warning –
If it is not malware or some software related issue in your system, hardware error is most likely to be the culprit for the random booting behavior of the system. Most common sources of failures are fans which don’t work or else SMPS failure. When the fans stop working system gets overheated and consequently it stops working. When power supply fails it is not sudden instead it fails gradually. So this becomes a warning sign to inexpensively check the power supply to stop further disaster.
If you are planning to repair your SMPS consider these things: If you are not comfortable do not perform the tests which are mentioned in any manual to service the power supply. Do not open the SMPS case as it often and always consists of high voltage. Remove any static electric built upon your body or clothes before you even think about opening the CPU on the first place.
