Symptoms of Depression

Depression is a disease caused by the imbalance of of chemicals and hormones in the brain. Moreover, outside influences can lead to this problem such as lack of sleep, poor diet, conflict, business loss, serious illness, etc.Recently, the worldwide recession and anxiety about the future have contributed to this pheenon.

There are various symptoms of depression; some of them are reckless behavior, loss of interest in daily activities, concentration problems, feeling of hopelessness, memory loss and anxiety. These symptoms of depression can increase with age as the person’s responsibilities grow. However, young people are not exempt from depression, far from it. Teenage depression is a growing problem since they have a hard time handling society’s pressures to fit in and/or stand out. Also, they have to deal with absentee parents or parents who set poor examples or those who expect too much. Plus, they have to decide whether to cave in to the age-old teen problems of alcohol and drugs.

Depression, research finds, is equal in men and women, but men ask for help less often. The depression shows itself in about the same ways: anxiety, weight loss, not eating or overeating, insomnia, loss of sex drive. Women, however, will cry and tell others of these feelings.

So, treatment of depression becomes crucial when the depression has gone on for too long with dire results like job loss, marital discord/divorce and suicide. There are different treatment options, including homeopathic remedies such as St. John’s Wort, prescribed medications such as Zoloft and talk therapy with a psychologist or psychiatrist.
