Yantras: what are they?

Yantras are visual instruments which are used as tools for concentrating and carrying out medication. Yantras have a geometrical pattern with different concentric figures like circles, squares, triangles and other floral patterns. Each of the figures signifies different meanings. The word ‘Yantra’ has been derived from two Sanskrit words, the root ‘Yam’ which means ‘to support’ and ‘Trana’ which means ‘freedom’. The syllable ‘tra’ is taken from this word ‘Trana’. Yantras have a spiritual significance and the individuals are guided to higher levels of awareness. According to Hindu belief in Tantric tradition, a Yantra provides immense astrological benefits to the users. The Hindu mythology has many deities who are worshipped by the Hindus. There are different Yantras which are associated with these deities. Each yantra is the symbolic representation of each deity. For concentrating on each deity, the specific yantra should be used.

Other than the basic concentric figures in the yantra, there are many complex symbols like lotuses, dots, swastikas, Bija mantras, etc.

• Lotuses represent chakras and each petal of the pattern represents a psychical aptness to each chakra.

• The triangles or the satkona have different significance. The upward triangle represents the element of fire or Shiva. The downward triangle represents the element of water or Shakti.

• The bindu or the dot signifies the starting point of the universe.

• The swastika signifies good luck, prosperity, welfare, etc. Spiritual victory is believed to be achieved with the swastikas in the yantra.

• Bija mantras which are inscribed in the Yantras in Devanagari signify acoustic roots of a chakra.

The process of involution and evolution is also represented by the yantra. The process of involution is represented when the concentric figures grow away from the centre step by step. In case of process of evolution these figures will gradually grow towards its centre. The Yantras are made up of different materials like precious stones, metals, alloys, etc. As said earlier different types of Yantras are there representing different deities like the Shiva yantra, Ganesha yantra, etc. Similarly Yantras representing different planets are also there. Shree yantra is a popular yantra which is used by many individuals for mediation and beneficial purpose. There are mantras associated with each yantra to make it more powerful.

The Shiva yantra is one such yantra which can be used by individuals to get rid of fears and bring out the positive energy from within. As the name suggests, the Shiva yantra is used to arouse Lord Shiva and thus break away all the negative influences from an individual’s life and bring in peace, good health and longevity. Happiness and peace will eventually come into the life of individual who use the Shiva yantra.
