Why People Look Online for Deals

As the recession reaches new depths people are looking for new ways to find the best deals. Advertisements in shop windows are half as effective now half the shops have shut, and town centres are much quieter than they once were. So it makes sense that consumers turn to the Internet in search of a bargain.

A popular British broadsheet newspaper states that it is likely the Internet economy will grow by 10% annually for the next five years. With the UK government setting targets for broadband or equivalent speed Internet access being available to everyone in the country by 2015, it seems probable that people will increasingly view the Internet as the place to find great deals on everything from clothing to electronics to holidays.

Searching for a bargain on the Internet doesn’t necessarily result in an online purchase. Many potential consumers compare prices online, and people often want to read reviews of products they like the look of. Regularly consumers simply want to find products they might like to buy in future. However, it’s quite difficult to engage in a spot of retail therapy sat in front of a computer screen, and consequently the demand for vouchers and discount codes to be used on the high street is growing, with specialised companies thriving in this market.

The public clearly view the Internet as a cheaper place to shop. The business model afforded by online retail giants obviously appears to stack the odds against traditional small businesses, but this doesn’t always have to be the case. Most high street shops, regardless of their size, now have an online presence, even if it’s just a website; today over half the first page results of a quick search have physical shops on the high street; and there are new and popular channels to promote more traditional brick and mortar stores springing up online.

The advent of social media has provided a great platform for companies and individuals to market themselves with little cost involved, but this really is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to innovative ways to get noticed. Unquestionably, however, offering deals online is increasingly the most effective way to entice customers back to the high street. Not having to leave the comfort of your own home until you know there are bargains to be had is a great incentive to take out your money and shop.
