MPLS and High Performance
MPLS (multiprotocol label switching) is the up and coming way for companies to transmit voice and video over a network with little delay and high reliability. Many companies are using video conferencing over the internet in order to communicate over a wide distance using video and audio, creating a virtual boardroom in which topics can be discussed as if everyone were in the same room. This technology of transmitting video and audio over a WAN (wide area network) has been around for many years, using a system known as ATM (asynchronous transfer mode,) but it never took hold as a practical application in LANs (local area networks) to communicate, however it did create improvements in VoIP (Voice over IP) which allowed people to transmit their voice over a network to a specific IP (internet protocol) address.
MPLS took many of the technical ideas from ATM in order to become more efficient at transferring data packets across the system. Rather than analyzing the entire data packet, the MPLS system will only analyze labels attached to the data packet in order to increase the speed at which the data packet is transmitted across the network. This allows for little delay in creating a live video and audio feed across a wide area network or a virtual private network.
The MPLS system works with the IP (internet protocol) address so that video and audio can be sent to a specific machine, creating a low delay and making the use of video and audio conferencing more applicable and based more in real time than being subject to delay. This would allow two people to communicate with each other over a live video and audio feed with little worry about extreme delay in the system for MPLS will quickly analyze the data packet and send it to the specified IP address.
Many schools use such a system, employing MPLS to allow a teacher to teach a room full of students without ever having to set foot in the room. The teacher can observe the students in real time and the students likewise can observe the teacher. The teacher can answer questions, give out assignments and conduct lectures across a wide area network, effectively teaching classes that could be based in several states and in different classrooms. The students can interact with the teacher as if the teacher were in the room.
MPLS is slowly replacing the older ATM technology because of it’s reliability and high performance. It allows people to communicate across large distances over a wide area network or a more secure virtual private network (VPN) and even local area networks (LANs.) This technology makes it easier for companies to hold meetings that span across countries, shrinking the gap between people so they may be able to share their ideas and opinions with each other in a virtual environment that has little or no delay. Ideas can be shared over a network as if the people communicating were standing in the same room.
