UPS systems adopt VRLA batteries
For businessman, ups battery is very important for their computer, which can help them back up their key data when suddenly there is no power. Most UPS systems use Valve Regulated Lead Acid batteries (VRLA). These batteries are designed for Maintenance Free service. Unlike with flooded cells, the user doesn’t have access to internal battery parts. User cannot add water, check acid’s specific gravity, or internal connection. User’s service, when the battery itself is concerned, is generally limited to visual and performance checks, and to battery replacement, whenever it doesn’t meet stated specifications.
Verification of declared battery lifetime, according to international standards, is performed by subjecting the battery to elevated temperature test, while in floating voltage regime, until its capacity drops to 80%. Life expectancy is calculated, based on Arenthius relation, stating that life decreases by 50% every 8-9°C above 25°C. Accordingly, to achieve a 12 year battery lifetime in
25°C, the battery should withstand 9 month test in 60°C, without reducing its capacity below 80% of stated rating.
VRLA batteries are classified from low cost 3-5 year versions, up to 15 years versions. Most UPS manufacturers use the low cost high rate batteries able to provide high currents for a few minutes. Ability of battery to provide current is a function of the active material in contact with the electrolyte. In order to provide high currents, manufacturers must increase the contact area; achieved by using thin plates thus allowing more plates in the same volume.
If so, it is an important device for company or others. Hence, maintaining the battery is also necessary anyway. For larger UPS models, service and maintenance of batteries are critical to the reliability of the UPS. Periodic preventive maintenance not only extends battery string life by preventing loose connections and removing corrosion, but it can help identify ailing batteries before they fail. Even though sealed batteries are sometimes referred to as “maintenance-free,” they still require scheduled service, as “maintenance-free” refers only to the fact that they do not require replacement fluid.
