Asthenopia – Do You Suffer From Itchy or Watery Eyes?

Asthenopia, or eye strain, is simply a matter of eyes that are tired from overuse. Extended computer use and lack of sleep lead to tired eyes, a condition which may include itching, watery or dry eyes, vision changes, and puffiness or redness. Rest is the best treatment.

That may be nice to know, but it doesn’t really solve the problem of tired eyes. So many of us spend our days working at a computer and then turn to a screen for relaxation afterwards – games, TV, or recreational computer use at Facebook or Bebo. If you complain about tired eyes and your granny tells you to get more sleep, it doesn’t seem like a solution.

First, you want to get rid of the evidence of tired eyes. Put cucumber slices or wet tea bags on your eyes for five minutes. Lying down with your eyes closed for a few minutes will give your eyes some rest, and the natural chemicals in the cucumber slices or the tea bags will help to firm up the skin around the eyes temporarily. You’ll have less puffiness.

Eye make up can help, too. Skip the eyeliner, because it will just draw attention to the problem. Instead, use a pale highlighter at the inner corners of the eyes. A champagne colored eye shadow right by the tear ducts can give the illusion of brighter eyes. Curl your lashes, too, for a wide awake look.

Others may not realize that your eyes are tired, but you will still know it. Tired eyes feel tired or painful, and there may also be lessened depth perception. Particularly if your eyes are tired not just from lack of sleep but also from extended computer use, you are likely to find that your eyes’ ability to accommodate change is affected. Usually, when we look at a close object and then refocus to look at a more distant object, our eyes can adjust so fast that we’re not even aware of the change. Asthenopia causes this response to come more slowly, making it harder to judge distances.

In extreme cases, there may even be blurred or double vision. Take an online eye test to make certain that your problem is simply tired eyes, not something more severe. While an online eye test isn’t the same as the test your optician gives, regular use of such tests will alert you to any changes in your vision that may need attention.

Apart from that, listen to your granny and get some sleep.
