Is it worth to maintain electric golf cart batteries?
It is well known that batteries are the heart of electric golf carts or golf trolley, which are very important in keeping them run. A lack of knowledge about basic golf carts maintenance can lead to all kinds of problems. So you have to ensure that you maintain them properly. Besides, good maintenance may let your golf cart achieve optimum performance and long life.
Golf carts are typically powered by six lead-acid batteries mounted beneath the front seat. And how should you maintain your golf cart batteries?
First of all, you need to examine the outside appearance of the batteries. You should try looking for cracks in the container and the top of the batteries. If there are cracks in the container, or dirt, fluids and corrosion in the connections, it means you should replace your damaged batteries.
Check whether all vent caps are tight. If they are tight, then you can start cleaning the battery top with a cloth or brush. Use baking soda and water to ensure that any cleaning solution or any other foreign matter doesn’t get inside the battery. Rinse with clean water and dry with a clean cloth. Finally clean the battery terminals and the inside of the cable clamps with a post and clamp cleaner. Reconnect the clamps to the terminals and thinly coat them with petroleum jelly. Always keep the area around the batteries clean and dry.
Another important step is to fill distilled water after fully charging the golf cart battery if your electric golf cart isn’t maintenance free. If the battery has been discharged partially or full, the water level should be above the plates. And at this moment, you need to fill distilled water, but don’t fill the water all the way up to the cap. Besides, the water must be distilled water. Then check water levels in each cell of each battery weekly to ensure that the leaded plates in the battery are submerged in liquid.
