Winter Tyres Around the Corner
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but summer is over. Yes it may seem like we never really had a summer this year but even then it is over, I’m over it. Many weather forecasters are predicting another treacherous winter, with snow, ice and freezing temperatures. Last year we saw some manufacturers and franchised dealers introducing winter tyres, like they have in America.
This year motorists are being encouraged to seriously think about using winter tyres to stay safe and mobile. TyreSafe a UK organisation promoting tyre safety are keen to drill the message home before winter kicks in. To demonstrate the need for winter tyres they arranged two Mercedes Benz C Class models to take to an ice rink. One was fitted with standard summer tyres whilst the other was fitted with a set of Michelin winter tyres.
Two fundamental test were carried out, a braking test and a cornering test. In the braking test both the C Class models were driven to 15mph and then the brakes were applied, the model with the standard summer tyre took 9.75 metres to stop, the winter tyre donned model stopped in 7.01 – that’s a 40% difference!
The corner test was made up of cones, where the Mercedes Benz C-Class estate using standard tyres suffered from high understeer with a loss of grip leading to the car being unable to complete the manoeuvre. The model fitted with the winter tyres safely drove around the corner. So, if you are thinking to buy a new Mercedes-Benz E-Class or C Class this winter, do consider a set of winter tyres.
