A Deeper Feature Of Rap
What is the first thing that pops into your head when someone mentions Hip Hop? Do you think about the mainstream generic tracks that play on the radio? Do you think that Hip Hop music is only about being rich, having lots of jewelry, getting with lots of women, and thinking you are the best in the world? People that don’t listen to Hip Hop that often usually think these things about this wonderful music genre. Regardless of the singles that are on replay at the radio stations, Hip Hop music can be much deeper than any other genre. People don’t believe this because all they see is the advertised version of Hip Hop music.
If you were to compare the radio’s version of Hip Hop, to what a real Hip Hop fan would call Hip Hop, you would see a huge difference in the music. There are a lot of artists that try to stay totally mainstream but some of the best Hip Hop musicians stay out of the spotlight and produce meaningful music. A lot of the deepest artists don’t even get to the fame level that many ‘radio style’ artists do.
The theme of the real Hip Hop songs are much different than the hedonistic views heard on radio singles. Many of the most critically acclaimed songs are about family issues, violence, sad stories, or drug addiction and problems. The form of expression on these kinds of songs is much different than any song that is on the radio today. Emcee’s express their true feelings and views about experiences and the world. Hip Hop music began as a way of expression about cultural issues, and the best artists recognize this.
Common, Kanye West, Joe Budden, Eminem, and Scarface are just a few names that come up when you talk about some of the deepest songs ever. However, many Hip Hop fans will agree that Tupac takes the cake when it comes to music with real messages that can move you. While you may be thinking of a couple singles from each of these artists that are less than deep, for the most part, their music has a lot meaning. The normal songs that you hear from these artists on the radio aren’t the songs that I’m talking about. You would have to listen to their albums to get a feel for their musical deepness. The albums from each of these artists show their true artistic side.
The radio has changed what Hip Hop means to a lot of people unfamiliar with the whole genre. That is why a lot of people have said that Hip Hop music is dead over the last couple of years. However, just like you don’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t judge Hip Hop by what the radio chooses to play. You always have to look deeper to see the true value of the Hip Hop music genre.
