Cold weather running gear: perfect to get out of woods in cold weather
As the weather cools and fall and winter running conditions replace summer’s, runners need to think about gear and precautions associated with running in cold weather. Running in winter and cold conditions can be fun, but also requires some planning and preparation in order to get the most enjoyment out of it.
When it comes to cold weather running gear, athletes should invest in high quality clothing that will help them enjoy outdoor runs. Not understanding the necessary winter running gear, or skimping on cold weather clothing can both lead to cold climate runs that are not enjoyable. In addition, safety can be more of an issue in the winter months, meaning that runners should do their homework and adjust their technique if needed.
A typical run in cold weather could include running tights, a long-sleeved base layer, good shoes and heavier socks, as well as an outer shell and light hat. Many gear manufacturers market running gear designed specifically for cold weather, and sometimes equipment designed for other sports such as cross-country skiing can be great when it comes to winter running.
In addition to gear, runners often find that other technique or safety measures are useful during the winter months. Cold weather runners often find that they need to stretch more than they would on a warm summer day in order to avoid pulled muscles or tendon injuries. In addition to stretching, some runners find that they need to slightly alter their stride if conditions are bad, such as snow or ice on their running paths.
The good news is that running in cold weather can be an exhilarating experiencing, as and cool, crisp air can be a great contrast to the warm, humid conditions associated with running in the summer. Starting in the months of October and November, many runners are faced with the choice of running outside in cold weather or running inside on treadmills. With a little planning and the right gear, running outside in cold weather can be a great option for many athletes.
